NEWS FLASH !!
The Forest Service is insisting that the 2009 GILA MONSTER ATV Jamboree acquire a commercial permit and use the existing road inventory.
This is not acceptable, as the existing road inventory is a pathetically inadequate and inaccurate portrayal of what is really out there. There are simply no motorized trails inventoried in the Gila National Forest. Despite hundreds of miles of excellent ATV Trails and single track motorcycle trails, the official Forest Service inventory doesn’t include even one single mile of either.
Decades of non-management by the Forest Service are evidenced by the fact that they simply don’t know what is out there. We have repeatedly submitted our GPS trails and maps to them and are now being asked to do it again, as they seem to have lost much of what we have gone to great lengths and personal expense to give them.
The Forest Service’s Travel Management process is in full swing. Our efforts for the next year or so will concentrate on the trail designation process in an attempt to establish a motorized trail inventory that truly reflects the motorized recreational opportunities in the Gila National Forest as defined and required by the Travel Management Rule.
The initial draft proposal from the Forest Service contains many of our trails, but just as many are missing. There are many insignificant trails, which we don’t mind if they close, but we are insisting that all of our connecting trails with high recreational value and no environmental issues be included in the new inventory. In the Burro Range especially, we have spent years collecting GPS data and refining our own motorized trail map. We know what is out there, they don’t.
The Gila Rough Riders is still inviting membership, which includes e-mail alerts, invitations to ride or attend special events like the AZ Outlaw Jamboree and special group rate tickets to Supercross in Phoenix in January.
Stay tuned, but unless the situation changes we will be taking a one-year hiatus from the official GILA MONSTER ATV JAMBOREE so that we can get this mess straightened out.
Welcome Gila Rough Riders to The Burro Mountain Homestead for the
GILA MONSTER
ATV JAMBOREE!!
ATVs, RZRs, Rhinos and Dirtbikes
March 24-28, 2010
Silver City, New Mexico

Welcome to the official THIRD annual GILA MONSTER ATV JAMBOREE! The Gila Rough Riders has been incorporated as a non-profit since 2004. The last two year’s GILA MONSTER ATV JAMBOREEs were a huge success, so we are going to do it again. We have been out here riding, GPSing trails and having fun for more than a decade, and there are members who have been riding out here since the 1970’s. The Burros is a fantastic place to ride, with a rare combination of difficult technical rock trails, fun meandering hilly trails, and smooth fast sandwashes. We have over 250 miles of first class ATV trails for this event, all at your doorstep. No trailering. That’s trails, not roads. This is home base for The Gila Rough Riders. We love riding here. The scenery is a unique blend of southern Rockies meets the Southwestern desert.

We have been working with the Forest Service, GPSing trails out here in the Burros for years, and plan on getting an official map and designated trail system in operation out here in the next few years. Meanwhile, enjoy riding with us on some of the best trails, and most interesting scenery anywhere. These are really great trails, and range from 5,000 to 8,000 feet elevation. Our map is the only accurate trail map of the Burros. You can get an idea what the map is like on page 4 of this website, but the real map is high resolution-color laser printed on 11”x17” high quality paper, and has been vastly improved for 2008, with a few tweaks for 2009.
We have 250 miles of awesome trails mapped and flagged and GPSed for the event. This year we will be using GPS overlays, Garmin only, which will download our map onto your GPS. Color mapping GPS units work best. Without our maps and flags, you would be lost in a heartbeat! You will get to ride in places only a very few locals even know exist! These trails are really great, and all rides leave from camp. NO TRAILERING NECESSARY !!

This is a section of the “Gnarly Trail”, don’t worry, it’s not all like this! There is a wide variety of terrain from gnarly stuff like this to rolling trails through tall pines to fast & smooth sandwashes.
Join the Gila Rough Riders! Bring the family! We have rides and activities planned for everyone. Spring Break for most schools either begins or ends on this same weekend of the GILA MONSTER ATV JAMBOREE.
Just after the 2007 very successful GILA MONSTER ATV JAMBOREE we were invited by the Burro Mountain Homestead to have our event at their awesome facilities, strategically located right in the heart of the Burros. This is a great turn of events. The Burro Mountain Homestead is an RV community on several hundred acres of PRIVATE LAND with full RV hookups, showers, a large covered outdoor meeting and eating area and a large historic adobe lodge. Check out their website at www.swcampers.com

The Gila Rough Riders are inviting our members to arrive Wednesday for early registration and Pot Luck BBQ. Bring a side dish to share, throw your steak on the grill.
Thursday morning we’ll be finishing up registration, qualifying riders and taking a few short rides. In the afternoon we’ll have the “GILA MONSTER ATV SLED PULL”. Thursday night there won’t be a dry seat in the house after Lix Lizard and Doona Gecko spin their “Classic Lounge” act of Rat Pack classics, Classic Country, and 60’s Pop. Just the thing to warm you up for some sing-a-long and Karaoke fun. You are going to get to know your neighbors and new riding buddies better than you ever wanted to at our little sing-a-long and Karaoke Mixer. BYOB, you’ll need it. The Good, The Bad, and the Funny.
No Meals served on Thursday.
Friday and Saturday. Let’s Ride. Use the “Ride Board” to set up rides with your buddies or new friends. Have lunch out on the trail on a full day ride, or have lunch back at camp after your morning ride, then head out on an afternoon ride. Remember, no trailering, ALL RIDES LEAVE FROM CAMP! Most rides are 6 to 8 hours long. It just doesn’t get any better than this!
Friday night is Audio/Visual surprises…and “build your own burger” night. We supply all the ingredients and side dishes, you make it your way. Then Gear up for America’s only Live OHV Game Show, “DIRTY BIZZNESS”. You could win a new set of tires for your ATV, some cool riding gear, vital accessories or,, some,, mud.

After all the rides are in on Saturday, enjoy a delicious BBQ brisket dinner and live entertainment you are not going to believe. Sit back and enjoy the live music on Saturday evening.
Center of activities will be the “Corral” at the Burro Mountain Homestead, pictured below. RV spots are just steps away.

Sunday morning have fun on a Poker Run and/or a GPS Treasure Hunt on trails you are beginning to call your own.
The Gila Rough Riders has the only ATV weight transfer sled in the southwest. We have taken it to the ATV Outlaw Jamboree in Eager the last Four years, an awesome event, check it out here, http://www.azatvoutlawtrail.com/ and we use it at our County Fair. THURSDAY afternoon’s main event will feature the GILA MONSTER. It’s fun to pull, and fun to watch, as you see which ATV can really get the power to the ground and move the GILA MONSTER farther than anything else…

We have come up with a way to make this event safer and more enjoyable for everyone. EVERYONE will be required to make a short timed “qualifying” lap on a little trail ride/obstacle course set up right at base camp. No practice laps, we want you to ride at a comfortable pace for you. This is a test of your judgment and perceptive abilities as well as your riding ability. You must safely complete the course in the allotted time to qualify as a BLUE rider. If you go too fast and have an accident, or miss-judge an obstacle and get stuck or stall your engine you will qualify as a GREEN rider and not be grouped with more advanced riders. You will be given a color coded Lanyard reflecting your pace. It is not a penalty to receive a Green Lanyard instead of a Blue Lanyard. The Blue riders are more experienced and able to handle the harder, rougher, longer and faster rides. This is our way of making sure riders are on the right rides.

”Adventurers” are our youngsters and beginners just getting the hang of it.
“Turtles” Slow and steady.
”Cruisers” riders just not in any hurry. They like Long and short rides, beautiful scenery, cool old mines, fabulous vistas. Pack a lunch.
“Cruiser Plus” like our Longest rides, faster paced to get back in time for dinner. Experienced Riders only.
“Shooters” ride dirtbikes, sport quads, and big bore utilities with an attitude. You know who you are. Morning and afternoon rides. There are two renegade motocross tracks guaranteed to wear you out in just a couple of laps. This group doesn’t like carrying much, so they will be back for lunch.
”Rockers” like 4x4s with a need for big rocky canyon crawls the rest of us want to avoid.
Check out the rest of this website. There is information on reservations, scheduling, maps, and directions to get here. We won’t need our big Tent for our gatherings as we will be using the “corral” at the Burro Mountain Homestead for most of our gatherings. There is lots of room to park any kind of rig, and this year we have full hookups for 35 RVs! Our main trails will be flagged for the event, and you might just learn enough while you are here to come back on your own and not get lost…

3 million acres of National Forest, 11,000 ft. peaks like this one, Sacaton, looming over the Gila River Valley. The Gila River is 564 miles long. It all starts here in the Mogollon Mountains of the Gila National Forest and winds its way through the Burro Range where we are having the GILA MONSTER ATV JAMBOREE. Riders in the Rocker class may get within one half mile of the Gila River, and can take a short walk for a cool dip,,,
Here’s the T-shirt design….
